Vegetarian food

Indeed we are meeting for the 60th. Food and drink will be consumed I should imagine.
Talking of which. As many of you know Kieran has become a vegetarian, so when he is home for the hols we too become vegetarians. I am feeling that my repetoire of vegetarian dishes is limited. We've pretty much got curries covered but I feel there must be good vegetarian food that does not involve either chillies or cheese. If anyone has the odd tried and tested recipe I would be eternally grateful. (Not tofu, though. Food is not meant to squeak against your teeth!)
Tonight we are having Chilli con Quorny (geddit? Erin's joke) . So we have got food pretending to be meat covered too. (hmm kidney beans and I have book group at our house. I will have to make sure the dog is in the room incase of gas leakage!)

Nuts and pulses cover a lot of ground with veggie cooking - have a look at some of my veggie cookbooks this weekend. As I don't cater for veggies as much as I did they don't get much use these days

I have one particularily gogeous veggie cookbook...Deborah Madison's Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone. It covers EVERYTHING...sort of like the Joy of Cooking. I got the Bean Book by Rose Elliot...bet every single thing I made from it was brown and sldgy...uck.

So, if you have something in particular...I've got it, or you could just buy the book...it is amazing.

Moosewood by Mollie Katzen is a N. American veggie favorite, and it serves a lot of the classics...but it, like so much early veggie cooking tends to be heavy on the cheese, and light on the interest and creativity....

What do you want to make?

Oh, my, goodness...can you tell I didn't read that comment over???

That would be..."but every single thing I made from it was brown and SLUDGY.."

When we visited Kieran in Bath we had lunch at a vegetarian restaurant which was superb. The flavour combinations were really intense and it made me realise the possibilities. I think Trev had the tagine, so middle eastern cooking is a possibility. Also, I like lentils when other people cook them but they're like horse mush when I attempt them. It's like when you first left home and were cooking for yourself and had to make a lot of mistakes before you could trust your judgement. That's why I want recipes that really work. I think I might order that Deborah Madison book. What I don't want is those awful meals that worthy people at university used to cook. Brown and sludgey, as you say, which made me long for school dinners!

Get the Madison book, it is all beautiful and has wonderful punchy flavours....and it has a bit of everything....you'd like it a lot. I ordered it from Amazon a few weeks ago and it wasn't too expensive.

Me AGAIN...I have been reading about the horrors of the US food system...and this is probably aimed at Mr. K over there...do you know of any good books that discuss/analyse/eviscerate the European system???? What happens over here...it is obviously more complex as there are differences from nation to nation, and also within and without the EU, and the ever-changing regs...but is there something out there?

My comment re: beef from Oreneta's web site - but relevant here:
OK - most of you know who I am - and I have read Fast Food Nation - and let me tell you - it made me go off beef for 3 months just from the sheer - ick - of it - and even though I live solidly in Europe and even more so in PL where giant agro - bus has definitely NOT taken hold. Really really scary - especially the fact that the government seems to sanction and encourage that the worst crap goes to school lunches! Very happy that my elder childs pre-school does not have catered lunches. I think I will never let my children eat any kind of school lunches.
Ironically makes me think better (in safety terms) of fast food - (some of it anyway) cause I know they have a huge vested interest in their clients not being poisoned :-) If you want to check out a really cool site about this topic (cant believe I'm recommending this) check out The Meatrix - (google it - don't remember the address) - if you have any clue about the movie Matrix and are interested in this issue - you will love it (especially Mr K and Boo i think) - (don't tell my boss I wrote this - ha ha)
